Fatty Liver Weight Loss Target Calculator

Guidelines for metabolic fatty liver disease are written in percentages of body weight, not in target weights. This turns those percentages into your numbers.

What each threshold means for you

These percentages come from clinical guidance on metabolic fatty liver disease. They describe what has been observed at each level of weight loss — they are not promises, and results vary between individuals.

Why guidelines use percentages

Fatty liver guidance is written in percentages of current body weight rather than target weights, because the liver appears to respond to the amount of change rather than to reaching any particular number on the scales. Someone at 120 kg and someone at 80 kg both benefit from losing the same proportion.

The thresholds usually quoted are:

  • 3–5% — associated with a reduction in liver fat itself (steatosis).
  • 7% — associated with resolution of steatohepatitis, the inflammatory stage, in a substantial proportion of people.
  • 10% or more — associated with improvement in fibrosis, the scarring stage, which is the hardest thing to shift.

How fast to lose it

Gradual loss is the point. Very rapid weight loss — crash diets, prolonged fasting, some rapid post-surgical loss — has been reported to worsen liver inflammation rather than improve it. Roughly 0.5 to 1 kg (1–2 lb) a week is the pace most guidance describes as both safe and sustainable.

Weight loss is also not the only lever. Regular physical activity reduces liver fat even when body weight barely changes, and cutting alcohol matters independently of both.
